    Solving non-uniqueness in agglomerative hierarchical clustering using multidendrograms

    In agglomerative hierarchical clustering, pair-group methods suffer from a problem of non-uniqueness when two or more distances between different clusters coincide during the amalgamation process. The traditional approach for solving this drawback has been to take any arbitrary criterion in order to break ties between distances, which results in different hierarchical classifications depending on the criterion followed. In this article we propose a variable-group algorithm that consists in grouping more than two clusters at the same time when ties occur. We give a tree representation for the results of the algorithm, which we call a multidendrogram, as well as a generalization of the Lance and Williams' formula which enables the implementation of the algorithm in a recursive way.Comment: Free Software for Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering using Multidendrograms available at http://deim.urv.cat/~sgomez/multidendrograms.ph

    Efficacy of pimobendan in the prevention of congestive heart failure or sudden death in doberman pinschers with preclinical dilated cardiomyopathy (the PROTECT study)

    <p>Background: The benefit of pimobendan in delaying the progression of preclinical dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in Dobermans is not reported.</p> <p>Hypothesis: That chronic oral administration of pimobendan to Dobermans with preclinical DCM will delay the onset of CHF or sudden death and improve survival.</p> <p>Animals: Seventy-six client-owned Dobermans recruited at 10 centers in the UK and North America.</p> <p>Methods: The trial was a randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled, parallel group multicenter study. Dogs were allocated in a 1:1 ratio to receive pimobendan (Vetmedin capsules) or visually identical placebo.</p> <p>The composite primary endpoint was prospectively defined as either onset of CHF or sudden death. Time to death from all causes was a secondary endpoint.</p> <p>Results: The proportion of dogs reaching the primary endpoint was not significantly different between groups (P = .1). The median time to the primary endpoint (onset of CHF or sudden death) was significantly longer in the pimobendan (718 days, IQR 441–1152 days) versus the placebo group (441 days, IQR 151–641 days) (log-rank P = 0.0088). The median survival time was significantly longer in the pimobendan (623 days, IQR 491–1531 days) versus the placebo group (466 days, IQR 236–710 days) (log-rank P = .034).</p> <p>Conclusion and Clinical Importance: The administration of pimobendan to Dobermans with preclinical DCM prolongs the time to the onset of clinical signs and extends survival. Treatment of dogs in the preclinical phase of this common cardiovascular disorder with pimobendan can lead to improved outcome.</p&gt

    Optimally squeezed spin states

    We consider optimally spin-squeezed states that maximize the sensitivity of the Ramsey spectroscopy, and for which the signal to noise ratio scales as the number of particles NN. Using the variational principle we prove that these states are eigensolutions of the Hamiltonian H(λ)=λSz2Sx, H(\lambda)=\lambda S_z^2-S_x, and that, for large NN, the states become equivalent to the quadrature squeezed states of the harmonic oscillator.     Dynamics and Berry phase of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates

    In terms of exact solutions of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation for an effective giant spin modeled from a coupled two-mode Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with adiabatic and cyclic time-varying Raman coupling between two hyperfine states of the BEC, we obtain analytic time-evolution formulas of the population imbalance and relative phase between two components with various initial states, especially the SU(2)coherent state. We find the Berry phase depending on the number parity of atoms, and particle number dependence of the collapse revival of population-imbalance oscillation. It is shown that self-trapping and phase locking can be achieved from initial SU(2) coherent states with proper parameters.Comment: 18 pages,5 figure

    Decoherence in Bose-Einstein Condensates: towards Bigger and Better Schroedinger Cats

    We consider a quantum superposition of Bose-Einstein condensates in two immiscible internal states. A decoherence rate for the resulting Schroedinger cat is calculated and shown to be a significant threat to this macroscopic quantum superposition of BEC's. An experimental scenario is outlined where the decoherence rate due to the thermal cloud is dramatically reduced thanks to trap engineering and "symmetrization" of the environment which allow for the Schroedinger cat to be an approximate pointer states.Comment: 12 pages in RevTex; improved presentation; a new comment on decoherence-free pointer subspaces in BEC; accepted in Phys.Rev.

    Occurrence of vagrant leopard seals, Hydrurga leptonyx, along the South African coast

    Leopard seals inhabit the pack-ice rim of Antarctica, and they regularly haul out on Antarctic and Subantarctic islands. Occasionally, vagrants are sighted further north in South America, Australia, New Zealand, and very rarely in southern Africa and Oceania. Here we report on an observation made on the 15th of July 2010 of a single 3-m-long juvenile leopard seal at ‘Die Dam’in theWestern Cape, South Africa (34°45.772’S, 19°42.582’E). We searched historical records and found details of four observations of leopard seals along the coast of South Africa since 1946. All of these sightings were of juvenile animals. The relative scarcity of observations is a likely reflection of the great distance from Antarctica and the Subantarctic to South Africa.http://www.sawma.co.za/am2013ab201

    The effect of near-surface plastic deformation on the hot corrosion and high temperature corrosion-fatigue response of a nickel-based superalloy

    Surface treatments such as shot peening to inhibit fatigue crack initiation are essential processes when designing gas turbine components for aerospace applications. It is therefore crucial to understand the effects of shot peening in representative service environments. Here, the influence of surface treatment on the high temperature corrosion fatigue response of a polycrystalline nickel-based superalloy is considered, an area that has not previously been explored. Two shot peening conditions; 110H 7A 200% and 330H 7A 200%, along with a polished surface were chosen. Specimens were salted and exposed to SO2 gas during fatigue testing at 700 °C. A range of novel techniques including SEM, EBSD and axial chromatism profilometry were used to analyse the near surface cold work and surface condition before and after testing. EBSD local misorientation maps, paired with an increase in corrosion-fatigue life, suggest that a greater depth of cold work produced by the smaller shot size (110H), is providing a significant benefit in terms of hot corrosion and corrosion-fatigue performance. This paper concludes that the presence of a substantial layer of cold work is required to account for any metal loss due to the effects of hot corrosion. It is also evident that cold work hinders fatigue crack initiation and delays the onset of pit to crack transition

    Post-breeding at-sea movements of three central-place foragers in relation to submesoscale fronts in the Southern Ocean around Bouvetøya

    At-sea behaviour of central-place foraging fur seals and penguins in the Southern Ocean is understudied during the latter stages of parental care and the subsequent pre-moulting period. This biologically important period is costly to investigate due to the risk (or certainty) of losing tracking instruments when the animals moult. Early in this period, parents must meet the increasing demands of larger, more mobile offspring that are still nutritionally dependent and then the parents must recover lost body condition prior to the onset of their annual moult. This study reports late-season, at-sea movement patterns of macaroni penguins, chinstrap penguins and adult female Antarctic fur seals from the subantarctic island Bouvetøya, in relation to remotely-sensed oceanographic features. Foraging trips differing significantly in direction and distance travelled compared to those performed earlier in the breeding season, coincide with the time when offspring would be expected to become independent. On these trips, macaroni penguins moved towards the Polar Front while chinstrap penguins and Antarctic fur seals moved southward.
